Barry Bonds strode to the plate with one on and one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Giants trailing by two runs. His team hadn’t scored in 20 innings, and needed a big hit. Bonds got a pitch he could handle from Oakland closer Alan Embree, something slightly outside, and gave it a ride to the opposite field.
